Sault Ste. Marie Water Tower
This water tower was constructed around 1900 and was in use until the
early 1960s. The masonry structure is 45 feet in diameter at the
base and 78 feet high, and topped with a conical roof. The lower half of
the tower is built of cut course stone, while the upper half is brick.
It houses a 370,000 gallon steel tank which is 40 feet in diameter.
Last winter the tower was wrapped with what appear to be copper bands. If you look closely at the photos you can see the bands over the brick.
The roof had become quite rotten over the years; pigeons had
breached the fascia and were living inside. The rotten roof will
be replaced by a new metal roof. The city now uses a more
modern metal water tower, located on Fourth Avenue just a
few blocks from the old original tower.
