Laker Hockey Challenge

Laker Hockey has been a source of pride for Lake Superior State University since 1966, building a storied legacy that includes five national championships and decades of passionate support. From its early success in the NAIA under coach Ron Mason to its NCAA Division I titles in 1988, 1992, and 1994, the program has consistently competed at a high level—an impressive feat given that LSSU remains the smallest public university in Division I hockey. That legacy continues today through a tight-knit community of alumni and supporters committed to the program’s success both on and off the ice.

To sustain that tradition, Laker Hockey Fundraising provides an essential “umbrella” for alumni and friends to invest in the program’s future. In celebration of its 60th anniversary, the Laker Hockey Challenge was launched following a transformative $1.5 million annual commitment in 2025. With $1.3 million already raised, supporters have a unique opportunity to match the full amount through December 2026 through cash, estate, or multi-year pledged gifts—helping strengthen recruiting, funding, and program enhancements. Donations to the Ring of Honor also directly support and count toward the Laker Hockey Challenge.
