Peter Gianakura ’48, Sault Ste Marie, has released an audio version of his book “An American Cafe: Reflections From The Grill.” Originally published in 2009, the book is a collection of delightful tales about the small restaurant that Peter ran for 43 years in downtown Sault Ste. Marie.

Rick ’86 and Susan ’87 Fitzpatrick, Sault Ste Marie, received the Historic Business Award for 2012 on behalf of Pingatore Cleaners from the Sault Ste Marie Chamber of Commerce. Paul Ignatowski ’86, Sault Ste Marie, of Sault Printing was awarded the contract for the Historic Water Street interpretive panels. These panels have been placed along a walkway adjacent to Water Street, designed to highlight the history of Sault Ste Marie. Mary Jill (Arnott) Leonhardt ’84, Sault Ste Marie, was named Employee of the Month for Sault Area Public Schools recently, after being nominated by Daniel Barry, Lincoln Elementary School’s principal. Leonhardt has been working part-time at Lincoln since September 1998 as a supervisor.

Charles Troy Chandler ’89, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., organized a local walk to increase awareness of spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Chandler was diagnosed in 1994, at the age of 28, with hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid inside the skull that leads to brain swelling. There is no cure. Troy and his wife, Annette, have two children. Joe ’85 and wife Joan ’79 (Mansfield) Claxton, Sault Ste Marie, were presented the Golden Hammer award at the recent Habitat for Humanity Carpenters Gala. The Golden Hammer Award is usually given to the person who leads the Habitat build, but in 2012 the awards were given for supporting Habitat in other important ways. Martin Cottle ’83, Sault Ste Marie, has been named the new purchasing manager of Soo Marine Supply. The business brings supplies, via the boat Ojibway, to freighters while they are under way on the upper Great Lakes.
