Messages in a Bottle To Roger Greil, Ashley Moerke and Geoff Steinhart of the Aquatic Research Laboratory I send you and your team a sincere thank-you for making the opportunity for my dad and I to catch Atlantic salmon, among other salmon species in the St. Mary’s River. I spent two weeks in DeTour, where my dad grew up, and fished the river near the mouth and the DeTour Light. The Atlantics are elegant and powerful on the end of the rod. I’m fascinated by them. What a fishing opportunity you’ve created and are sustaining for us anglers - Wow! Keep up the good work. On a side note, I saw you on the fishing show Hook’N’Look during a segment on your lab and the Atlantic stocking program. Jeremy Stevenson U.S. Army To engineering professor James Devaprasad: After I graduated from Lake State in 2004, I started with Fanuc Robotics in the Fanuc Toledo office in the Automotive Component and Industrial Paint Group as an Installation Engineer. My Computer Engineering and Robotics background from Lake State was crucial to being hired at Fanuc. When compared against other candidates, my hands-on experience with industrial robots set me apart…The Automotive Component and Industrial Paint group handles any paint, or spray application that is outside of the main line automotive body paint. We work with customers who spray fiberglass for bath tubs, powder for engine parts, porcelain glaze for sinks and toilets, as well as paint for personal watercraft and many tier 1 suppliers. I have had the opportunity to travel across the United States, as well as to various customer facilities in Canada and Mexico. I was also able to travel to Fanuc offices in Shanghai, China, and Bangalore, India, this past year to assist with projects executed by their groups. If there are any new graduates who you feel may be interested in becoming an Installation Engineer, please have them send their resumes to me. I will forward them to my manager. If they have any questions or concerns about the position prior to submitting a resume, I would be more than happy to help out fellow Lakers.... Anthony G. Pink ‘04 Chesterfield, Mich. I entered college liberal arts-nonpref. After three days and a chance meeting with a new friend, I decided I wanted to go to medical school -- a big leap, yes, but in 1975 not something most U.P. girls thought to do. My new friend, now Dr. Cathy Kroll, inspired me to follow my dream. Prof. Flynn made it happen. He pointed to his son, Stuart, as an example of what I needed to do: one was get out of History of Western Civilization and into inorganic chemistry! To do that, I needed to get into his closed Honors English class. He made that happen. He led me to my dream along with my lifelong friend, Dr. Kroll. After nearly 30 years in family practice, I now see Stuart Flynn, MD giving the LSSU commencement speech nearly 30 years after his father was selected as Distinguished Teacher at commencement. Seeing the commencement news brought those memories back, especially with Dr. Flynn’s mention of Dr. Duwe, who along with Dr. Person, the Gleasons and Dr. Chandra were all part of my college career at LSSC. Now my son, John Orttenburger, is there, so the tradition continues. LSSU is a part of my family -- my brother, sister and I, all graduates of LSSC, have had successful careers because of our start at the Soo! Thanks for keeping us informed! Charlene M.
