The two kept in touch over the years and when Lee’s children, Ryan and Stephanie -- pictured here with Nieckarz -- were hiking the entire length of the Appalachian Trail this year, Nieckarz and his family hosted them at his home in Cullowhee, NC for a night. They picked them up at the Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. “It was a great time and a great testament to the lasting friendships I forged during my short time at Lake State,” said Nieckarz, who teaches sociology at Western Carolina University.
